Looking After Your Rawsteelco Fire Pit
Your Rawsteelco fire pit is built to handle the New Zealand outdoors, but like any steel product, it'll appreciate a bit of care from time to time. A quick clean and re-season is all it takes to keep it looking good and ready for the next gathering.
Step 1: Give It a Clean
Start by wiping off any dirt, ash, or loose rust. A bit of water and a rag is usually all you need. Let it dry before moving on to the next step.
Step 2: Spray On Some Oil
Give the fire pit a good spray with cooking oil. We use standard canola oil, but any cooking oil will do the trick.
Step 3: Wipe It Evenly
Using a clean cloth, wipe the oil over the entire surface. You're aiming for a nice even coat, not heavy patches or drips.
Step 4: Get a Fire Going
Light a fire and let the steel heat up. As the oil gets hot, it'll start to smoke and bake into the surface, creating a tough protective layer.
Keep Going Until It's Black
For the best finish, repeat the oiling and heating process a couple of times until the steel develops a nice even black colour.
Just like seasoning a cast iron pan, each coat helps build up a natural protective layer. With New Zealand's weather being hard on exposed steel, regular use and the occasional re-season will keep your fire pit looking its best for years to come.
